Buying Trendy Plus Size Coats

By

Most women love a good shopping adventure, but as a plus sized woman I have always found it daunting to walk into a store and add layers that will inevitably make me seem larger. Every winter I dread encasing myself in a fluffy pillow-like coat. It takes a lot of perseverance to find the perfect winter coat but it can be well worth it. I have three main suggestions. Don’t get discouraged and keep your mind open to all possibilities. Pay attention to the fit of your new coat, and if you are in the lower end of the plus size spectrum don’t be intimidated to try something on in a store that doesn’t usually fit you. My last coat came from the Guess department at Macy’s a place where I normally can’t even find a sock that fits.

Don’t focus on the trends too much

Everyone wants to be in style, but keep in mind that what is in style doesn’t matter if you look awful in it. On the other hand if you look wonderful in a more classic winter coat cut you make it trendy by looking fantastic. This season I have seen a number of coat styles that look fantastic on all shapes and sizes many have long necklines to show off beautiful scarves. I almost never feel like I look good in a “puffy coat” but winters in New York make them a necessity. In order to stay warm and stay away from the dreaded down coat, I have invested in a great pair of warm boots. They have a removable felt lining and completely waterproof. I love the style since they have a very attractive functional look. With these boots... (continued below)

I can wear a less substantial wool coat with toggle buttons on all but the very coldest days.

Play up your assets

If that amazing coat you want doesn’t look so hot once it’s on your body try other styles that will accentuate your best features and the rest of your wardrobe even if it isn’t so inspiring on the hanger. I can’t stress this enough. You need to try on every style you can get your hands on until you find that perfect fit. Depending on your height you will find that certain lengths are going to make you look shorter and wider.  Have a trusted friend (one who will not let you make a fashion mistake) go along with you to try on coats. It should be a little easier since most stores have mirrors on the sales floor during the winter coat-buying season. You can try them on without having to stake out a fitting room. I often find that after trying on a bunch of styles I get the hang of what is going to look good on me. If you find a style that is right you can find great deals at online stores especially if you are looking for something by a more expensive designer or company.
